Education
Whether you are interested in pursuing a nursing career or are already working as an RN, earning a bachelor’s degree in nursing is a smart choice. BSN programs will open the door to more job opportunities and better pay than with an associate degree alone.
First and foremost, internationally trained nurses must meet the needs of basic education. These include:
- Have completed an accredited nursing education program in Pakistan
- Must have licensed as a Registered Nurse in Pakistan
- You have worked as a Registered Nurse in Pakistan for at least two years before applying to the USA
- Trained Pakistani nurses must demonstrate their proficiency in English by taking tests such as the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the test of International English Language Testing System (IELTS). There is a release depending on your country of birth.
- Licensed practical nurses, trained nurses, and patient caregivers are not allowed to transfer their licenses to the United States.
While the above is a requirement, many provinces require trained nurses in other countries to complete their nursing refresher course (FEN). These FEN have 120 study rooms and 120 hours of professional clinical practice under the supervision of a licensed Nurse.
English Language Proficiency Tests
To qualify for a US visa, Pakistani Registered Nurses must earn a 6.5 in the general IELTS exam and 7.0 points in the speaking section of the exam. You also need to pass an English foreign language test, like TOEFL with a minimum score of 560 or above.
Pass NCLEX Examination

Credentials Evaluation and Reports
The CGFNS is a company employed by the State Nursing Board to ensure applicants have the basic requirements and are ready to take the NCLEX. CGFNS Certification Program
The CGFNS Qualifying Exam helps countries determine if qualified Pakistani Nurses are ready to care for patients in the USA. The exam is designed to make sure you know how to care for patients in simulated situations. You can take this test at a testing center near the end of school and graduate.
VisaScreen: Visa Credentials Assessment
The requirements are the same as the CGFNS Certification Program, but graduates of this program can take the NCLEX to become eligible for a Visa. Application fees to the State Nursing Board range from $540-$800.
Obtain Employment Visa “Work Visa”
Once you have your registered nurse license, you can look for a job through a nursing recruitment agency or a US-based employer. When you have received an offer to work as a registered nurse at a hospital, you can apply for a US visa.
Permanent Work Visa
The Department of Immigration requires that most foreign nurses go through a green card process before coming to the U.S. If you want to work as a nurse in the U.S., you must obtain a permanent work visa, also known as a green card, before coming to the country legally.
